“Someone’s got a daaaaate,” Rowan sing-songed.

Robert scowled at her as he pulled salad ingredients out of the fridge. “It’s not a date.”

Except it totally felt like a date. After the torture of yesterday, being wrapped around Dinah and feeling all those soft curves pressed up against him, he sure as hell wanted it to be a date. But he was so far out of practice, he wasn’t sure he’d read the signs right. The last thing he wanted to do was come on to a woman who wasn’t actually interested. Maybe she had one of those unapologetically flirty personalities.

His niece eyed the peppers he was slicing. “You know, I’m really proud of all the adjustments you’ve made since your heart attack. There was a time I thought I’d have to arm wrestle you to eat a vegetable that wasn’t a carb.”

“I’ll have you know I was a perfectly successful, grown-ass adult for decades before you were born.”

“A grown-ass adult with an addiction to cheeseburgers.”

He pointed his knife at her. “Pot,” then at himself. “Kettle. Now shut up and go home.”

“But what if I want to meet her?”

“Then you can stand in line at her next signing like everybody else. Go.”

Rowan stuck out her tongue. “Fine, fine. I’m going. Enjoy your dinner.” She headed for the back door. “Make good choices!”

“Smart ass.”

The closing door cut off her laughter.

He’d barely finished adding the chopped vegetables to a salad bowl before the doorbell was ringing. Wiping his hands on a kitchen towel, he sucked in a calming breath and went to answer.

Dinah stood on the front porch in more of those leggings that were driving him wild and a long sweater in vibrant turquoise blue. Her hair was down today, and his fingers itched to dive in and explore. Instead, he backed up, opening the door wider. “Come on in.”

She stepped inside, and his mouth ran away without him again.

““How was your day? Did you get some work done? Is that an acceptable thing to ask a writer, or is it naggy?”

That rich chuckle stroked over him like teasing fingers. “It’s fine, since you’re not my editor. I actually got a lot of work done revamping the whole outline. It’s really starting to come together.”

Her eyes swept the living room, and he abruptly wondered if it looked as much like a confirmed bachelor’s space as it suddenly felt with the massive leather sofa and epic recliner. The throw blanket, handful of pillows, and token houseplant Rowan had bullied him into didn’t do much to dispel the reality that he’d been a single man living alone for almost twenty years.

Ill at ease, he jerked his thumb back toward the kitchen. “We’re grilling out.” At least if he got her out on the deck, that would be a space that felt more comfortable.

Dinah trailed him back to the kitchen.

“My usual preference would’ve been a classic steak and baked potatoes, but I’m having to mostly steer clear of red meat these days, so I’ve got tuna steaks.
